Some one told me to look at this because I had an idea. I had the idea that maybe XANA's weakness is water. I mean his 'ghost' (refering to the black cloud) never goes into water and in 'Laughing Fit' water was the key to stop the laughing gas (although I know Ms. Hertz already gave the scientific explaination). What do you guys think?
Also I went back to the first page and started reading. I feel like I'm in a room full of Jeremies! How do guys come up with this stuff? It's amazing!

Firstly - a warm hello to Oddsgirlfriend! 
It's interesting that you noted that, as yes, XANA's spectres do have a proven weakness - but in fact it's electricity (used by the team numerous times against possessees) - however the spectres are essentially electronic organisms so yes, water might have an effect.
(It should be noted though that the 'cloud' from Laughing Fit was a spectre that was also manipulating clouds of Laughing Gas so going into the water after Jeremie would have nullified its attack potential).
As for your other question, we are just very, very creative. Personally I'm proud to be a part of this group - we're achieving so much and going so far in refining our ideas - it's also great fun and also challenging in trying to find logical scientific and semi-scientific reasons for all this.
And good luck with starting from page 1, it's always nice to see new faces and if you have any questions or feel confused just feel free to post them or ask for help. Cheers!

AVATARS
When in Lyoko, the minds and consciousnesses of the protagonists operate through their Avatars – ‘bodies’ derived from their virtualisation scans and customised to suit their own tastes, combat styles and abilities. There is far more to these colourful figures though than meets the eye;
FUNCTION AND COMPOSITION
The avatars are not strictly ‘avatars’ in the internet sense – on forums an avatar is a small image which allows users to identify each other – while the Lyokan avatars serve the function of creating distinct divisions between characters, they also function as ‘file folders.’
When a body is virtualised it creates a VAST amount of data, which is uploaded to the supercomputer – entire human DNA strands, atomic and molecular scans, mental patterns and consciousnesses – vast.
With all this data spread through the computer interactions between various segments could become incredibly slow – the avatars then are conceived to interlink these segments and allow faster access – much like a ‘My Document’s’ screen allows fast access to other files.
In order to protect these valuable files they are stored in highly restricted-access portions of the supercomputer memory. These files are then compiled within the avatars, thus making the avatars invaluable in accessing this data.
Finally in order to prevent tampering of that data through the avatars Franz developed an interesting means of encryption. All data relating to the avatars and the data stored within them is encrypted in algorithms derived from human DNA. This encrypted data is thus known as vDNA and requires involved codecs to decrypt.
Thus the avatars quickly take on a deeper relevance, and it is here that the concept of ‘Life-Points’ come into effect – all data within the avatars are contained within wire-frames that derive their shape, and if the avatar suffers enough damage from XANA’s hostile programs the data begins to be corrupted at the detriment of the human encoded within it – therefore a ‘Life-Point’ system is established to monitor damage to the avatars, and a ‘Devirtualisation’ program developed to forcibly remove that data when corruption becomes a serious threat.

As an aside, it works that it was the presence of this highly encrypted, unreadable, unusual coding in Aelita’s vDNA packet that SEEMED connected to her abilities that inspired Jeremie to not only give the team weapons in Lyoko, but also superhuman abilities.
BACK-UP-DATA
Of course any data, no matter how secure it’s encryption and how involved it’s defences can be damaged, and so it’s wise to have a redundancy – and in the case of the avatars a back-up is held from the most recent successful virtualisation/devirtualisation cycle.

The avatars get nearly all of their data from the scanners, but if that data is left untouched it is nothing more than a string of digits – part of the virtualisation process is the construction of an avatar – a laborious and sometimes stressful sequence of combining files and adjusting settings.

The kernel Programming Pack contains a lot of variables affecting how the avatar will be affected by external stimuli, as well as what elements are incorporated from the scan. Here Jeremie can modify the settings to dull the avatars to pain, allow them to run great distances without feeling exhaustion and jump, run, balance and fight with a grace, strength and dexterity impossible for a human. When these are combined with the Lyoko attributes the team is transformed from students of exceptional willpower and courage, to literal superhumans in a simulated environment. It is noteworthy that Nick was able to strip the team of their dexterity and resilience in ‘The Chips are Down’ by deactivating this portion of the program.
With all these elements in place the avatar is now ready, and all that remains is to scan the subject, convert the data to a vDNA strand and upload that to the avatar.
Other elements however are defined by Jeremie and separated from the idle DNA – the mind for example.
Finally, when Jeremie tells the scanner to destroy the human body, he also tells the computer to inject the now ready avatar into Lyoko.
COMING AND GOING

This is perhaps the best and most comfortable means of leaving Lyoko. It can however take a considerable amount of time. Once Jeremie triggers the process the computer begins a dual process of maintaining the avatar in question whilst simultaneously decompiling its individual elements and converting them to strings of DNA and Quatum encoding. Finally the data is ready to be returned to the scanner and the final stage takes place – the avatar decompiles and it’s mental patterns are transferred to the scanner with the body data to be combined and constructed.
The process is very carefully executed, checked for regularity and errors multiple times and the net result is that the person will cheerfully step out of the scanner with no mental or bodily fatigue – the person can actually be virtualised again rapidly as their bodies are physically ready and the various elements of the avatars are held in the console in an easy-to-compile state.
It should also be noted that Jeremie has written a more effective materialisation program than was originally present in the system, but in the interests of care and keeping the subject safe the process can still take some time.
DEVIRTUALISATION PROCESS
It’s a sad fact that this program which was written as an emergency fallback is actually used more than the program primarily intended for bringing a person back from Lyoko.
The devirtualisation process is in actuality a poor-man’s version of the materialisation program, which is triggered by an avatar’s life-points falling to a critical level – the program begins to prepare to yank this person out of Lyoko – the scanners power up the data begins to decompile and translate – unfortunately in a crisis situation there is often very little time between 30,20,10 and 0 LP, and so the process has to be sped, stages cut out, the whole affair stripped to the bone – and the net result is that the person is saved, but also they are usually exhausted, on occasion in mild pain.
This is worsened in cases where the person has been devirtualised due to a sudden ‘death’ in Carthage, a devastating surprise attack or where they have ‘committed suicide’ in order to leave by their own free-will, as the program has no forewarning or time to prepare, hence the recovery process has to be a sped and rushed affair, literally streaming data straight from the memory banks to the scanners via the vDNA/DNA codec pack.
The process also requires a longer turnabout time before the subject can be virtualised again, partly due to the physical exhaustion, also because the program has not had time to salvage the avatar components, so Jeremie is back to square one in terms of recompiling the elements.
XANA has been able to exploit this rushing element to put the lives of the team in serious jeopardy – in ‘Routine’ and ‘Franz Hopper’ he was able to corrupt the programming to an extant where the computer believed everything was in order, when in actuality the vital stage between the decompiling and codec processes has been stripped out, with the result of the vDNA being scattered across Lyoko and lost.
That said there is a failsafe inherent – the program will only forcibly eject the subject if it believes all elements are ready, safe and functional – this failsafe was tripped in ‘Common Interest’ when Ulrich and Odd attempted to suicide out when the scanners were inactive – in this case the program refused to eject them as their data had no-where to go. Thus they were held in Lyoko, but at considerable self-risk. If a collection of monsters had attacked them their data would have been lost had they gone 20 LP beyond the point of devirtualisation.

Tragically this data was probably still in the restricted-access memory, but with the loss of the avatar links Jeremie could never even know they existed, let alone go hunting for them in an area to which he does not possess access codes.
As a result, Aelita could not be devirtualised – if any of the team lost 80 LP they were instantly dragged out – Aelita did not, and without that her avatar would suffer fatal damage if she lost a further 20.
When exploring Aelita’s avatar coding Jeremie only had one element to suggest she was not merely an advanced AI – the clothes she had been wearing when virtualised. Wow, that's really long! I haven't read it yet, but I shall when I have my free time tomorrow~
And you mentioned illustrations, yes? I could give a try at sketching out what you have in mind :O But if it's screencaps and such like the previous ones, then I can't help you there. :o

Your lurking is fine Lani - as long as we know that people are reading it, and not only reading but reading, understanding and enjoying is very heartening - your comment was a great compliment.
As for pictures - personally I want screencaps but also illustrations, diagrams, schematics for the final piece - anyone who thinks they can do technical drawing or even just a few nice sketches to break up the heavy dialogue, let us know! - of course if we use them or not will be a group choice.

I have been lurking in this thread for quite some time, and am fascinated by everything that has been proposed. It makes me happy to know that a show drives such an intense amount of study in other people into physcis, computers, engineering, etc that I have taken up some myself. I am still in the earliest stages of learning but I think I am making progress. I appreciate the existence of this thread and everyone who has contributed to our inner working of lyoko understanding. good job guys

Alright! Awesome as usual.
This being my forte, I do have a few more nuances than usual. I noticed with vDNA, you didn't explain that it was virtual DNA code (you just said "v," as if the reader was supposed to know what it was), It also needs to be explained that it is a code that the computer can understand and can thus export into a Lyoko-interfaceable format-- DNA structure and bio data also tells the computer how to construct the avatar wire-frame based off of their real life bodies, not just their genetics (aka not having a "default height/weight"-- it might feel strange if Odd was suddenly as tall as Yumi)
Also, that the vDNA file is divided into sections-- part with the literal "code" translated from DNA sequences and biological data, as well as non-bio data, etc being in a different section. Those two sections however are seperate from the Lyoko attributes, which are uploaded to Lyoko still within the "vDNA packet." The consciousness files, however, are completely separate in the "Avatar folder." Perhaps a diagram would help..

Also, Aelita's power is called Synthesization, not Creativity. It was a nice term, but I saw this on the official site. ^^;
You mentioned instances of one of the gang falling into the Digital Sea. I think this deserves to be explained a bit more, if not given its own section.
Firstly, the Digital Sea itself needs to be defined-- it is nothing more than an undeveloped portion of Lyoko with insufficient coding, specifically the coding that holds together the contents of the Avatar file while on Lyoko. Hopper most likely thought this would look "drab" while he and Aelita were happily being being insane masters of Lyoko (sorry, not trying to knock on the genius) so he added a nice "ocean" effect.
When an Avatar on Lyoko passes the point of Capable Lyoko Space and Incapable Lyoko Space (aka the Digital Sea), there is nothing that separates the segments of the vDNA file, keeps that inside the Avatar, displays the graphics, maintains the limits of the "body space" as defined by the vDNA... so in essence it "spontaneously corrupts" and all the data is scattered. That part was mentioned, though.
Also, Materialization can only occur specifically in Way Towers.
One final thing-- A nice Revalation that since Aelita has her memories and is now a complete human being while in the computer, she can be devirtualized. There's another side to that-- since XANA has taken Aelita's Keys to Lyoko, she most likely no longer has the ability to Synthesize and alter Lyoko's map. A scarier thought would be that she would no longer be able to deactivate towers.
I'm sorry if I sounded like a jerk or I was being overly harsh-- I just kinda took notes as I read and emphasized on them. It really was an excellent, beautiful article! Bravo.

Right then. I just wanted to say that, after having read through my response and editing it a couple times, that I think the parts on the "Instinct" portion of the consciousness file as applied to being on Lyoko, as well as the Digital Sea, should go into an article dealing with Lyoko's processes itself.
I agree that XANA probably copied them.. oops. >.<

While I can't offer quite as indepth amount of comments and criticisms as YDV, seeing as this is his forte, not mine, I do have a few thoughts.
One is that throughout the article, it seems to be implying that the 100 lps is sort of a countdown before they die in the Lyoko, and must be devirtualized at around 80 to prevent mishap. I believe thats incorrect, since all sources point to being devirtualized at 100, and also in Contact, Jeremie specifically stated that Odd lost 80 life points in that one shot from a Krabe. Though I believed continued damage without a forced devirtualization may lead to possibly injury and scattering of the data, as long as the ejection program is up and running, no major ill effects should occurr. With Aelita, they try to eject her but since she doesn't have a back-up file like a normal human containing her human DNA to reconstruct her, the supercomputer just experiences an electronic hiccup.
Second, I disagree with YDV in that the materialization requires a Way tower. Although in Code: Earth, Jeremie did you use a Way tower as his starting point, in Exploration, Aelita exited a Way tower then used a neutral tower other than the Way tower to materialize herself.
Not sure if I can put in more, again, YDV is the major expert, not me. But these are things to consider.

I believe how TB3 was trying to put the whole life points/de-virtualization thing is that at around 20 remaining life points (or 80 taken away however you prefer to look at it) the super computer prepares various programs and data for immediate de-virtualization so that if the life points do hit 0, the super computer can imediately de-virtualize the person rather than having to wait for everything to get prepared for the process and allowing more harm to come to them.

If you were going for what I commented on earlier, than I respectfully disagree. If your going for what Vchat20 stated, this kinda wording is confusing to the point.
Also, another minor point, technically the last vision Odd had was not of Yumi falling into the digital void. Odd's last vision was in Laughing Fit, 9 episodes after Cruel Dilemma where Odd recieved a vision to guide Aelita to the tower.
As a result, Aelita could not be devirtualised – if any of the team lost 80 LP they were instantly dragged out – Aelita did not, and without that her avatar would suffer fatal damage if she lost a further 20.
That said there is a failsafe inherent – the program will only forcibly eject the subject if it believes all elements are ready, safe and functional – this failsafe was tripped in ‘Common Interest’ when Ulrich and Odd attempted to suicide out when the scanners were inactive – in this case the program refused to eject them as their data had no-where to go. Thus they were held in Lyoko, but at considerable self-risk. If a collection of monsters had attacked them their data would have been lost had they gone 20 LP beyond the point of devirtualisation.

Great feedback guys - I've made notes of it (p[articularly my LP gaff!) and now I'm diving into writing 'Mk. 2' of this chapter.
Also, I've spent the past hour swotting on Wikipedia and from what I've learned I'm also going to redraft what vDNA is, if this is acceptable. I'll explain my versions below;
Human DNA does not build a body - it directs animo-acids to build proteins to build an embryo which will eventually develop into a feotus and then a body. THis is very elaborate, takes a long time and simply doesn't work.
Therefore I think that although the scanners do scan the DNA and make a copy of it (in order to reintergrate it into every cell during devirt/rematt/matt processes), they do NOT build the avatar from it - simply beause the data encoded in the DNA would not yeild something that looked remotely like a human.
vDNA is similar in that it's the instructions on how to build something, but it is governing virtual particles rather than proteins, and encoded in it is the data from the subject's molecular scan rather than their DNA.
This scanning data is converted into the vDNA packet - and then tiny portions of that packet are intergrated into a standard template vDNA strand (this template lays down the framework for how the avatar will be built, how it will move, speak, interact, interpret stimuli etc.).
The template though is just a blank slate - it's the coding which is identical from avatar to avatar (if we go with the example led by human DNA then 99% of the avatar's coding is shared and that coding is contained in the template).

In the case of the warriors Jeremie can tell the computer to fill in some gaps with vDNA he had written and placed in the 'Lyoko Attributes' folder.

Hi! It's me again. Firstly thanks for the warm welcome. Secondly I gave up trying to read this from start to finish but it was very interesting. I like how you try to think of a logical reasoning behind everything. I personally just execpt everything that goes on in Lyoko, probably from reading so many fantisy books, but it's nice to have some logic. I was really suprised when I was able to understand all the technical terms. Thirdly keep up the great job you guys have been doing!

Um.. Not very many of us have the time and patience to explain ALL of our developments to you just because you popped in and asked. I'm not trying to be mean or anything, I just suggest you either read TB3's articles or go back and look for youreslef.

You're right, DNA does not build a body. But it carries the genetic characteristics of the person, everything that makes them themselves. In essence, if you were to -combine- these characteristics with the molecular scan (which I'm pretty sure was part of the bio-data portion of vDNA. All of the information from the scan, spare for the consciousness, is grouped within the "vDNA packet." It's only a small portion that actually contain's the person's genetic code. And then combining it is basically what it does anyway.)

To ask a general "what has happened so far?" is kinda overdoing it though as there are 36 pages of material we've created and to condense all that into a single post would be tiring, difficult, and would not do justice to the discussion that has taken place.
As for the current debate at hand, again, vDNA is not my forte. Except for the conciousness file, none of the processes going into the avatar files are my thoughts or have any of my major thoughts. Give me some time to think about this and study up, and I'll try to give an opinion.

I had a boring out-of-hours chemistry lesson today on Atomic Structure. Then my mind wondered over to Exertanium. And I thought, has TB3 and the others thought about Exertanium on this scale:

I think it could be possible. Dmitri Mendeleev left gaps in the Periodic table when he drew it in 1869. Unless, the gaps haves have been filled, you could find a place to put it in.

I haven't thought that over TL - it's a great idea! Anyone here want to give it a try - you'd need to research superconductors though.

Okay - I've been studying through Wikipedia again and have been researching DNA etc and finally think I have a definition of vDNA;

VDNA
vDNA (or Virtual DNA) is a means of storing vast amounts of data in a very small computer space - it also allows for highly advanced data encryption.
In November 1994, Leonard Adleman of the university of Southern California puslished a paper entitled: Molecular Computation of Solutions To Combinatorial Problems - in it Adleman revealed to the world that he had suceeded in building a computational system based on the structure of DNA. He termed the new field 'DNA computing.'
Adleman was both a molecular biologist and theoretical computer scientist (indeed it is he who termed the phrase 'computer virus'), and it is likely that Franz Hopper would have been aware of Adleman, his theories and his research months before the paper was published on Nov. 11th.
DNA Computing has vast potential for liquid-based supercomputers - on April 28th 2004 the Wizeman Institute announced they had build a DNA computer 100,000 times more powerful than a desktop PC.
Obviously these developments came far too late for Franz to physically modify his computer's hardware to exploit it (EDIT - or maybe he did - any thoughts on whether the computer could have a few liquid-DNA-based memory clusters?), but he was able to in the software.
Franz wanted to virtualise humans to Lyoko - to achieve this he would have to encode and store vast terrabytes of data - and building on Adleman's concept Franz created vDNA.
vDNA is a computer simulation of a DNA strand, in which all the data of a human transported to Lyoko is encoded - their mind, their molecular data, their powers and even their human DNA for safekeeping.
As vDNA imitates true DNA, it's data storage capacities are vast - one cubic centimeter of DNA can hold 750 Terabytes of data (or 1 trillion CD's worth)! Although vDNA is only a simulation, and thus has vastly smaller data-storage capacities, it is still a great means of saving memory space in the computer.
In vDNA all of this data is held in a compact state, and just from its very genetic nature it is highly encrypted - Franz also used it to compress seven years of video diaries onto a single set of CDs, and encrypt it in a unique and near inpenetrable format.

If this works for everyone it would be great! If this is accepted, then we have finalised what vDNA is, and now only have to agree on 'how' it is used to finalise the avatars.
