I have a rant for you.

Postby Paige » Fri Feb 10, 2006 1:56 pm

Ever think people are trying to control you? Well, Erin, I think you are trying to control these people. Now don't get me wrong I like this forum it's very well put together, and yes, I know you can do whatever you want on it. But, I don't think it's very fair that you force kids to type and write things in perfectly correct grammar/language. Some of them can't and you critisize them for it! I think you should tone down the rule a little bit. I myself, like this rule, and I never type like the way you hate, but keep in mind, this forum is getting bigger, and you can't just ban people JUST because they forgot to put a period in their sentence, or used an abreviation. I use abreviations quite a lot [i.e. lol, brb, bbs, bbl, lmao] but those are all commonly used. So anyways, what I am trying to say, is that maybe some people can't use correct grammar/use of language, and you shouldn't ban them. And you are taking advantage of you're place on this forum when you say things like, "I might also ban you, it just depends on my mood." That is not right, and you shouldn't ban people just because you feel like it. If you want to ban me for this, then that will really prove my point. Because I have a right to voice my opinion and this is it. Now don't get me wrong Erin, this isn't just an attack on you, it's an attack on all of your mods who make sure this rule is followed quite forcibly. I actually like you all. You guys are just great! I just think you're getting a little too out of hand with this rule. It's actually getting kind of ridiculous.

I actually think its being forced pretty leniently imo. the only times I have ever seen SW or the mods openly warn people on this rule is when they were typing shorthand as if they were on a cellphone. and in fact, this is sometimes pretty difficult to read. I still do make various mistakes primarily in the capitalization department and ive never been bothered about it.

Ok, it only takes about a 4th grade education to learn the basics of grammer and the like, and I agree with the rule because I can't stand trying decipher what people are saying when they go 'zomg tey r hte ahxz0rz' as you can see, or not, this kind of typing is fun every once and a while but if it happens too often then it gets to be an eyesore, and I personaly belive that if you have to turn to slang,l33t, or the like then you hould have your keyboard taken away. I mean really if you don't know basic grammer(Spelling is a little different though) then why are yor parents letting you on a computer when you can be using that time to study? Spelling....I am not the best speller and never will be. To be honest I suck at spelling....Period....

Spelling for me has always been easy although I sometimes misspell words. And grammar has been easy, but I know for a fact that it can be very difficult for some people to use correct grammar/use of language. I am only sticking up for those who don't grasp the concept of grammar. Now that I think about it, this is kind of becoming a bit racist. Discriminating against the people who can't use grammar correctly. Putting them into that group known as, "intellectually defficient" because that is what we are all thinking (including me) when people type like that. But me, I have enough sense not to go and say anything about it. It's just sad that you guys make fun of them, or call out their mistakes to them. It could be quite embarrassing! Put yourselves in the people's position when they can't use PERFECTLY correct grammar. I know I don't. And most of you don't either. Including the mods and Erin. So if you're going to enforce this rule, I have one piece of advice for you. Make sure you are enforcing it yourself! Especially before you go and point people's mistakes out to them! How would you like it if I went around pointing out your mistakes to you? I will to prove my point. Make sure you perfect your grammar and spelling or else you're being hypocritical.

Finally, I got someone who agrees with me. Great work, Paige. That is the way it should be. That is how its said. That is how its done. You know what, Paige is right too! We all shouldn't have to type in perfect grammar all of the time. We all shouldn't have to agree on everything. Things need to be loosened.

And like I said above, the only time Ive ever seen this rule terribly enforced like you say it is is when someone starts writing in leet speak on a constant basis in which it is difficult and annoying to read.

Not that im kissing Erynns you know what, im just stating what I have seen. And I do have to agree with you somewhat Paige on the fact that I dont think it needs to be enforced to the absolute letter.

Firstly, Mewberries is a girl - secondly she is an excellent moderator and well-liked so cut the back-chat, thirdly you've not been here very long and the way you're throwing your weight around is not acceptable.

Now, as for grammer - the staff and members are hardly grammer Nazis - you're free to go a little 'loose' in games and BKO, and we have made exceptions for people with dyslexia and other learning difficulties - however we are trying to make a forum that is accessable to all, and if members are talking in 'cell-talk', 'l337 5p34k' or just intentionally lazily then they are ruining the forum for others (example of laziness - you couldn't even be bothered to type my name correctly in another thread - I am TB3 not FS3).

Also this forum is growing in status as a CL-fanhub and I for one would like to see it maintain its good appearance and reputation - that means tidy threads which are legible to all - Hidushikai, I can barely READ your newbies thread and I'm a 19-year old net junkie, imagine what it's like for someone a lot younger or a computer newbie.

Also Paige, you should know better than this - if you and any of the others have problems with the spelling rule then take it the the correct thread in Site Discussion.

And lastly, this webpage is Erynn's PROPERTY! She pays for the domain, she built it up from scratch, she has the right to ask members to follow the rules she's laid down, and I'd like to salute both her and the staff for keeping those rules enforced to date while also maintaining an informal and fun atmosphere.

That is all. As you like to say Hidushikai, you now how the oppurtunity to learn and improve, or stay as you are and be worse for it.

To anyone else reading this - see you around. :)

Nice reply TB3!!

In all seriousness, I don't understand why people have so much trouble typing correctly. :arg: It's not that difficult to do. It doesn't take long to hit the Shift key to make letters capitalized. And grammar should not be a problem. You should have learned that in at least elementary school, maybe Junior High/Middle school.
It's alright to make spelling mistakes, goodness knows not everyone can spell. My dad is really good with crossword puzzles when he's not mucking it up with spelling errors. But you can at least try, if nothing else open up a word processor and type it in if you're really not sure how to spell it.
The grammar and spelling rules are there for a reason. If you don't like it, deal with it. But like I said above, I don't understand why it's such a problem for people.

Hidushikai wrote:typing like this is annoying. ive gotten used to it. see?

It's annoying for others to read when you type like that. Like I said, hitting Shift is not that difficult to do. And you obviously still haven't gotten used to Erynn's spelling and grammar rules if you're still not using Shift to capitalize letters.
I personally am glad that she has these rules up. And I'd be willing to bet that a lot of other users, especially the VAs are happy about it too. I'd hate to come to a site and get eyestrain trying to read half or more of the posts. And that is the exact reason those rules exist. If you don't like it then leave.

Hey! Wait a MINUTE! This is a RANT! Not a site discussion thing! It shouldn't be moved there because this is a rant! So with that said, someone said something about variety.

Well, this forum has a lot of people on it now, and you ask ALL of us to use perfect grammar/language, then it's no fun anymore! I mean, there have to be som people who talk annoyingly. Don't try to make people do something. That's wrong!

I can see if you would want to enforce that if there were only about 50-100 members here. But this place has 508 members. How do you expect to force them all to type perfectly? Its simply immoral to try to make someone do something too.

Why should some people allowed to talk annoyingly just to amuse a few people who think it's funny?
I very rarely ever try to make someone do something. I know how rude that is. All I'm saying is that people should type correctly. It reflects on who you are. Typing like you're 5 years old and don't know how to use a keyboard; and that's exactly how I'm going to percieve you. If you don't want that then type like you're mature and responsible.

I do type like I am mature and responsible. I am just sticking up for all the people who don't/can't. You don't know how old some of these kids are! Some of them could be in 4th grade or even 3rd grade for all you know. Heck, I could be in 3rd grade for all you know. How are you ever going to find out? You probably won't. I know what it's like to not know how to do something, and have a group of people make fun of you for it. I also work with a group of kids who can't do things quite right, and I am sticking up for them! I hate it when people make themselves inferior to people who can't do things right. To me, that is more immature than anything.

So you'd like one set of rules for one group of members and another set for another. And with 500 members enforcing the rules becomes vital as it becomes easier for the situation to slide.

Also how many of those 500 members are active? And who's forcing you to stay - if you don't like it you can leave any time. This is Erynn's site, please follow Erynn's rules, okay. :)

I think what I said is perfectly clear and backed up by the evidence on display - the only people I've seen of late with spelling issues are a few very new members still settling happily in, and Hidushikia, who is in a class of his own.

I'm disapointed in you Paige. There, I said it. Same goes for BBC and Hidushikai who have just come in and begun throwing their weight around - I hardly think that's appropriate for new members.

He/she's right. I'm not that good of a off the top of my head thinker so I'm not good with debates. So I'm just going to watch this happen. But make no mistake, if Paige is any good at this, it won't be too hard for him/her to prove you wrong if you don't back yourself up well.

I'm going to stick with what I said earlier. I don't understand why it's so hard for people to type correctly.
Maybe what I said about not typing correctly being immature was a little rude and off the mark. But that's how I see it. Even in 3rd grade I knew how to type, so it shouldn't be difficult for others to as well.
I understand that some people have dyslexia or other learning problems that make it difficult to type or spell correctly. But I don't think that there are THAT many people like that on here.
Some of you are saying that it's rude to make other people do something they don't want to do/can't do. I know what it's like to have people laugh at me. Believe me, I KNOW!!! You don't even want me to go into that. But asking that people shape up or ship out is not rude. And is totally within Erynn's rights as this is her website. If this was my website a lot of you would be gone.
I'm tired of people who can't be bothered to type things in a mature, easy to read manner. It's just annoying. It's not hard.
If you don't like the rules that are plainly stated and inforced then GO! No one is making you stay or preventing you from making your own website.

You guys need to know what happens when a person's opinion is shot down like it's a fact for it to be wrong: The person might close up and not be open anymore.

Is that what everyone wants from Paige? I know I hate the feeling of just shuting up so people will get off my back.

But I do agree on the account of "it depends on my mood". That could also mean though that if someone keeps pushing the almighty buttons after they've already gone too far, it would make sense.

Paige, I do admire your openness. I like to see people do that. Let your emotions out and be cool like that.

I never said I was against you - I like you :) , it's just that we've had a difference of opinions - my real problem lies with Hidushikai, who as I see it is proof that basic punctuation should be enforced - I actually find his stuff hard to read.

Let's see what I have to say... well, TB3, Rose and Vchat20 spoke a lot of things that I can agree with.

Paige, this forum was made by Erynn and as far as I remember, it wasn't made for inmature CL fans. LyokoFreak is like a escapeout from inmature persons that can't keep up with most rules. <b>It was made to have mature discussion of Code Lyoko, aside from what Games, GD or BKO stand for.</b>

If you were a moderator, you would know that dealing with spammers and persons who type incorrectly on a constant basis is annoying. Or dealing with VA stalkers... that was annoying, stressing like the Taelia/Matt case. And to make a better place of this forum, there are rules to follow. The Admins and Mods try to make this forum a better place for everybody to enjoy.

Paige, if you don't like the rules we are putting you have two choices: to leave, or to remember the rule that if you don't like Code Lyoko, you shouldn't have joined in the first place.
