...I'm not being mean. I swear.

Postby YDV » Tue Mar 21, 2006 7:00 pm

I am NOT being mean. But... I can't take this anymore.

Okay, people... let us learn the difference between the words "there" "their" and "they're." Shall we? :)

There is a pronoun, a preposition, or in some cases, an adjective. For instance: There are numerous objects. Go over there. That glass there has a crack in it.

Their is a possessive, meaning something that belongs to "them." Their dog ran away. Their clothes are ugly. Easy enough.

They're is a contraction between the words they and are. They're silly hobos. They're going to the store.

Okay? I may not be perfect, but I'm like a spelling/grammar nazi and it bugs me to no end when people say things like.. "Favorite songs and there lyrics."

Again, I don't mean to be rude or offend anyone, but pleaseeee. It's part of the rules. (I -WAS- gonna put this in GD, but I thought eh, it's more of a rant than anything else. >>)

:O NAZIS!

Actually, in WWII, (officially) New Lyoko was involved in a very small mission against the Nazis. We snuck in. And. Uh... stole Hitler's... refrigerator. ^^ (Because as far as the world is willing to admit for fear of being pounded on by thousands of square miles of nuclear missiles, NL has existed since the 1600's! :P)

That was cool!
Okay, so, that's what I did in fifth grade...we had to do DMR, and write sentences with I'll and Aisle and stuff like that... :snoring: But, if it helped us, it helped us.

I must be like the only person on earth who doesn't think all those years of drilling grammar rules into our brains weren't pointless. >>;;

My friend learned it a different way, The way they learned it made it sound like a sex song.....I told them if they ever sang it near me again I was gonna kick their @$$es. Oh....I am not a Grammer or Spelling Nazi. I am no good at either of those. But I am a retard Nazi, I accept stupidity to a degree such as a few typos here and there, but if it is somethind along the lines of l33t or something of the sort, or completely un-readable. Thats when I call in the ARPU(Anti Retared Person Unit). Note this is from another site where such things are not welcome...that and getting angry at the senior members for not liking idiots....Well...not everyone can be happy I suppose. But I NEVER get angry at someone for a few grammer mistakes, or even spelling mistakes. I make them more then enough. But for the love of all things good learn to type so we can at least make out most of it!! ><

*bows down* I officially love you. If Doggiegal were here, I'm sure she would feel the same way.

And if I may jump on the little rant on grammar here for a moment, can I remind everyone that the word your're is a conjunction meaning "You are" and that your is possessive, meaning something belongs to you.

Ah grammer. The internet's worst enemy. I can't tell you the number of times i've wanted to go out and slap someone for using bad grammer on the internet and the excuse that its faster to type that way doesn't count. If you can't spend a few extra seconds to check yourgrammer than you shouldn't be typing in the first place.

Bravo for someone finally pointing that out! It bugs me sometimes too when people can't remember english...(at least the ones that learned english growing up)
I hear voices...and they don't like you.

There are very few people in this world who truely scare me...and you're one of them.

Next time you have a thought, let it go.

I've made up my mind, don't confuse me with the facts.

It is annoying when people get homophones mixed up. Homophones, for those of you who don't know, are words that sound alike but spelled differently.

Their, there, they're
To, too, two
Hear, here

Why can't people get them right?! :arg:

Yes, I totally agree. I hate it when someone uses terrible grammar, especially when they grew up with the language.

Just don't let my friend see this board. She could rant on and on and on and on about bad grammar all day, and if you annoy her enough, she literally smacks people who use bad grammar. :D

Because a fat lot of people don't pay attention in grammer and spelling class.

But seriously, I thought of a nice (but kind of complicated) way of getting the their, there, they're thing correct.

ear-hear and here-there.

Notice the similar definition and spelling between the words. That leaves "their" up for the only available definition. As for "they're", all you really have to do is "split the word" into "they are" and if it sounds wrong (to a normal human being) in the sentence then its obviously grammatically incorrect.

I may use shortcuts, but I try not to on this board. To some extent, it does get on my nerves. For instance, if a sentence has tons of misspelled words to where i can't understand, i just skip over it.
That's how I try to test it. If it doesn't make sense, I try to fix it, or figure out what someone is trying to say. This doesn't work for all sentenses though. Some sound incorrect, but are correct. I can't think of any right now.

Finally!
One of my RL freinds actually blocked me on Msn for correcting his grammer, i hate it when people refuse to use proper grammer, another one of my RL freinds claimed he didnt have to use proper grammer or spelling because he was from sunderland.... as you can guess im called pedantic a lot... punctuation is a different matter...
Also its worth noting that people who say its quicker to not use proper grammer are nearly always people in low english/literacy groups....

I don't even know what a pedantic is. I don't know if I agree with that, but it may be true. I'm just lazy, so when I'm typing here, I have to make sure I don't use "IM" language as I call it.
