LyokoLover...you did the very same thing though with a piece of art by Son-Neko (the J/A pic); I remember calling you on that, and asked that you at least put credit to her for the original sketch of it. Even better would have been asking permission to post it since it wasn't your original picture, but a colored pencil version of Son-Neko's. At least you did give credit though.

Speaking of Icon theft though, you do know that the "XANA Inside" icon you're using was made by a member of DA by the name of QuiGonJin. I hope you've asked his permission to use that icon, otherwise that's icon theft, Lyokolover.

LothoFoxburr wrote:The thing is they can't tell who the real owners of the art is. Some people let others use their art too so it would be really hard for the them to stop art theft.

I never said personally contact them. It might even be better to publiclly threaten them about art theft. Besides, direct action has always yielded better results for me.

They can't, but we can. It doesn't matter if they can't tell, the point is they have no way to do anything about it (other than us contacting them, which should be enough proof for them to take it down). If they can't guarantee that the work presented isn't authentic (or that precautions have been taken to stop art thieves), then they shouldn't have the contest at all. DA, at least, gives you some kind of protection against art thieves with their "Report" feature; Report a deviation as a "theft" and it's taken down immediately. CL.com has nothing of the sort; only one e-mail address by which to contact them about site problems.

There's no place to "publically threaten" them either, with the exception of the forums. And the Forums are a branch off of the main site, so the thief may never even see your threat (of which they might not care about anyway).

Something has to be done. It's getting out of hand.

TB3 wrote:I have to confess I used Chibi-Jen-Hen's Aelita picture to help me with the posture of a fanart that wasn't working right, but I don't think I've ever really stolen art (even TL's avatar which I chose for him is only a Hellsing manga-graphic that a fan coloured in).

Hmm...but passing someone else's work off as your own is plagarism to the nth degree, and frankly despicable.

Using reference is something all artists do, as all art is based from real life. Now if your picture that you made with Chibi's Aelita pic was also an Aelita picture, with the same pose and the same concept, then that's bordering on art theft, at least. I'd have to see the picture to make a judgement on that. I can't tell from your description but I don't think you've technically stolen art either. A nice thank you to Chibi for the reference would be thoughtful though.

Either way, I just hope that for StarWay at least, everything works out in her favor.

Okay, just did a little search with a 'friend' of mine (www.thefreedictionary.com), and decided that this is when a

'...person intentionally and fraudulently took personal property of another without permission or consent and with the intent to convert it to the taker's use.'

Although the art in question is not of any major value, it still has value considering that it was made with pencils, a computer, pens, etc., which were all bought by or given to the producer of the art. This would make it (legally) petty theft, and thus ilegal (sp?). I'm not exactly sure how a lawyer would find the person who stole, but it is invariably crime.

Hope this helps! :D

PS -- here's the site I found this on -- http://legal-dictionary.thefreedictionary.com/theft
If 'poly' means many, and 'tics' are blood-sucking insects, then what are 'politics'?

If you find theem, send them to a summer class with my computer teacher. That'll straighten 'em out!

Or just force them to listen to her site. It's horrendous!

XD You scared me...how did you edit my post and merge your own into it? I thought for a moment I'd been hacked. :*D

You made a good point though. I didn't think it was dumb. This kind of thing needs to be discussed there (as it appears it has not been previously). :)

Oh and DarkBorn, here's a link to where her's and my own post can be found.

It's in the tech support forum. I'm not sure what happened exactly but Mew's and my posts were merged by the mods. :P

XD I was wondering how our posts got merged! I thought you might have done it on your own, but that's amusing that the Mods did it. Isn't that hacking in a way? O_o

I know I possibly wasn't the one that started the iPod thingys, but I have seen that a lot of people on that fourm have the ones that I did. (excluding the Aelita and Milly.) It still grinds my gears knowing that someone has taken my work. :cussout:

You should watermark your icons, DL. Like I did.

Not really. It's stupid for them to do that, but they have every right. And they don't have to hack to do that, they just click a button.

Ahh, I see. ^^; I'd never seen them do that before. XD
And for what it's worth, I disagree entirely with what two members here have said about you on another thread. You're an exceedingly nice person, and a caring and dedicated admin. *hug*

I have to say I can completely agree with whats been said so far here about CL.com's level of administration/moderation. I think I was active there for like 3 weeks alongisde the tv.com CL boards. But as I had mentioned to Star Way in a non-related PM, once I had found LF and became a member here, I pretty much stopped going to CL.com and TV.com altogether. And I dont think I need to explain why.

Back on the original subject, I havent had any of my work stolen (thank god), but I have seen it happen in a passerby point of view and I must say it is very difficult to judge. Primary example: There was this one fanfic posted over on the CL boards a while back with the synopsis that Yumi had auditioned at some modelling agency and some time later she was insanely popular and lived in the states. Needless to say, this was a long story and by the time I got to the last page where a heated argument was going on about the OP plainly copying the same fic as it was posted by someone else on FF.net, I had no real idea on who to believe. And it really disappointed me because I would have loved to have seen the story continue a bit more

Would either one of these fics happen to be the one you were reading? These are the two longest and most popular fics in which Yumi is a model. The first one in particular, I believe I have seen posted at CL.com, which may very well have been the same thread you were talking about.

I remember that story. It's pretty old now.... I think way back when I was still into reading ff it was still being updated. :P

I suppose plagarism in fanfics is probably a lot worse than art theft. There's really no way to prove that it belongs to any one person...

That fic is also being re-writen. I've noticed that the "updated" chapters, are like chapters that I've seen before. As for the story itself (when I was still reading FF) I loved it.

pretty simple. in any competent graphics program like photoshop, just create some basic text to identify you as an author and drop the opacity to allow the image to show while still having the text visible.

I figured that, but IMO that ruins the avatar; otherwise I would have done something like that for my avatars long before..

Ya.... There is a sight I go to often, the guy who owns it got so sick of people taking his are that he found a way to disable the right mouse button....

Also, anyone thought of Micro-Marking?

1. Zoom in on an easy to find aria on pict (the purple aria in odd's hair is a good aria).
2. silect your singil-pixil thing...
3. Make a color that NEARLY maches the aria
4. make smale, pixilated watermark...
5. catch art theft red handed (unles they colored/inked your drawing...)
Mood today: O_o

However, Macintosh computers don't have a right mouse button in most cases. For them to get the art, they simply click-and-drag it to the desktop. Of course, I could be wrong and maybe the removing of right-clicking disables that, too. I dunno, just a thought.

This still sucks, though. I wish there was something I could do, other than sit here in my chair and think.
