XANADU

General original series discussion (Seasons 1-4)

Moderators: The Administrators, Moderators

Postby TB3 » Sun Apr 09, 2006 11:05 am

I'd just like to add in relation to recent activity here and several PMs I've recieved, that Project XANADU is pretty much dead. I'm sorry, but it had to be said.

There were several problems we faced:

1. Expense - the ideal 3D software we needed costs a lot of money.
2. Leadership - JeremyHopper, the project conceptualist, vanished during initial discussions and has yet to resurface - ideally we need a leader figure for those taking part to rally around.
3. Administration - practically, it's very difficult to get multiple individuals in various areas of the world to work together as a group without an established administrative system to run and organise everything.

Unless these problems and many others can adressed, XANADU is dead in the water, which is a pity IMO, but there's not much than can be done about it.

Yes it was...

To TB3:

It's goin' nicely, the reason I was never here was because I had basketball games 8 days a week. (Is that even possible???)

But now the season is over, so I am free. yay!

The other reason I am never on is because, with new CL episodes not showing up, about all interesting conversation (to me) has died down.

The code lyoko technical chats you started up are just a tad too technical for me. I mean I would love to put in my input and all, maybe I will.

I will probably be more involved now, i guess.

But as they say, In Xanadu's case, Paradise Lost. ;)

How is everyone else? EDIT: and thank you for the chocolate, TB3! *devours*

:wag: :wag: :wag: STOP!!!!!! This isn't over! We can't give up yet! I have a program that you programmers can use. If someone can tell me how to upload it, then maybe y'all can get something on there. Even if the graphics aren't too good, it's better than nothing! It should also be very compatible with Basic codes like Quick Basic. I also have some pics from the DVD, which should help some of you people. As soon as I upload it to my Putfile profile, it will help out alot. I also have a program called hexworks, and that should help alot in the de-bugging. I can also be a great help if someone could teach me how to use these freakin' codes! As for getting people together, what are we doing here? I also know some people that might be able to help out. They're @ http://lyoko.conforums3.com and @ http://www.codelyoko.com/forum, and @ http://osiria-Lyoko.co.uk. And as for administration, TB3 can take charge right? If no one else will lead, I shall!!!

NO, IT SHOULD NOT BE COMPATIBLE WITH BASIC.

It should be compatible with stuff like C, .NET, but NO BASIC!
If a basic programmer doesn't know why basic is bad, then *no comment*

Daegon, what is the program called? Just wondering...

And no, we're not using BASIC, as far as I know, but we haven't really reached the programming phase yet, so we won't need that for a while.

You guys are tenacious, I'll give you that.

Look - one of you, try and get in touch with JeremyHopper and ask his opinion - he had the best grasp of how the project would work being the original conceptualiser - if you can reel him back into active participation, then the project might still go ahead.

1. The 3D Software problem could be solved easily. All of you take turns on the 30day trial, give the file to the other person, and let them intall 3ds max <loop>

2. The most dominant must take charge

3. You cant expect things to flourish quickly, be patient and find easy but unique ways of advertising

The project is certainly not dead, we just need to get a feel for the water before we jump into the pool, pardon the expression.

--- Someone knowledgeable needs to look for a program that works the best. ( I have no idea of what to do.)

--- We Definitely need to keep recruting.

--- We also need a leader, but I do not know who would be the best. He/she needs to be somewhat knowledgeable, very organized, and have a lot of free time. I do not know who fills that criterion, but if you think you do, call your name out.

Another option is that we could divide the whole project up into parts and have many leaders of many divisions. (aka: encoding, recruiting, beta testing, programming, software searching, landscape design, etc.)
That should be able to work, but we definitely need more people.

(I will head recruiting if nobody else wants to...) :D

Well, that is most definitely NOT me! I will help out as much as I can, but I don't see myself as any kind of leader/coordinator (I'm horrible at that sort of thing)

3dsmax sounds like a great choice, and the 30-day trial rotation sounds great too. Plus, I have the full version, so I can help out with that (as soon as I get better at modeling more than basic polygons)

And I know that I'm probably thinking a bit far ahead, but if we ever decide to make it into a video game or something like that, I suggest that MalikDraco makes the monsters (check this out). Conveniently, he also uses 3dsmax.

Anyway, I'll bone up on 3d modeling, and I'll try to help out with recruiting, beta-testing, and maybe programming, depending on which language we decide to use. I'm good at working out problems, but my programming experience is somewhat limited (pretty much just java applets and console apps), so I can help debug and find reasons for errors and the like.

One suggestion for recruiting: I think everybody involved with this project should put a link to this thread in their sig.

EDIT: Meh, quotes aren't working. Anybody know why?

For the time being, just go into your Profile and disable your ability to use HTML. This is the temporary fix at the moment for the quotes problem. StarWay is looking into a permanent solution that does not require disabling other forum features. :)

And lyokowarriorboy2005, please do not double post. It's spam-ish. I've merged your posts this time, but next time please just use the Edit feature to add new text to your original post. Thank you.

Never give up damn it!

Postby Crockyr2002 » Sun Apr 16, 2006 12:29 pm

Don't give up so easily! I have a 3D graphics software piece called pro desktop 22-I, its great for designing 3D objects. Me and my friend have created many radom and cool things from this, including many spaceships. And whats more I got it free from school, so try asking around for pc software at school.

Also, I have another piece of software caled darkmind which is about creating virtual worlds, i'm not altogether shure on how to use it but if someone is prepared to start this up again i'll give it a go! :D

I could create a tower or some of the vechiles, we may need allot of memory though when we switch this on so rake out the cash! A note on the finacial side, try scrounging software from school and if your school/work throws out a computer ask for its ram cards, for they can make the comuter run faster and make our world perform better. In a way we will be creating a 'super computer'! lol.

So if any help is needed I can e-mail across software.

Thanx guys! The Program I have is called Genisis 3D, for windows 98. That means that for thse college kids who try to save money by holing on to the old computers will be able to use this software easily. I think it might work for the other systems like Macs, but I'm not sure. Good thinking! Scrounging would be a good Idea, especially in this case, where we're going to have to buy software. I was wondering, could sombody go and look at the software and make a list we need? And what 3D software should we choose? The Genisis 3D is mostly 1st person stuff, but it could probably do what you want it to do. If you haven't seen Jeremy around, has someone tried to send him an E-mail? Also, if we are going to make the Dessert Region, I had an Idea. How 'bout we take a map or make a map from Lyoko Episodes (one vid is @ http://osiria-lyoko.co.uk, I put in a link earlier) and then divide up sections for programmers to work on. And why don't different people work on different Islands, and Jeremy, or who ever is going to be our leader, can put it together, and add some background color, and maybe the digital sea. I also have an instruction booklet for people (author unkown) who want to learn how to make 3D maps, or get better at it. By the By, why does everyone say Meh?
