They're middle-aged men with beards and glasses. They no more resemble each other than either of them resembles me (except that they're both thinner than I am...)

However, another link between Miyazaki and CL is the use of realistic and recognizable drawings of cars in their animation. Miyazaki has had Citroen 2CVs in several of his films, and Spirited Away features an Audi A4 at the beginning and the end of the film. Earlier, as a director of the Lupin the 3rd cartoons, he had Lupin driving a Ferrari Berlinetta Boxer and a 6-wheeled Formula One car identical to Tyrrell P34.

While TV's car is not recognizable and I do not remember the car at the drivers' instruction in "A Bad Turn", one of the cars wrecked by the teddy bear in "TeddyGozilla" was a Mercedes-Benz A-Klasse

Mr. Delmas even says Yumi's last name the way a Japanese person would say it. (Jim says it too.)

My apologies for reviving an old thread but I found some really interesting similarities that touch on this kind of thing. ^^

SamBlob wrote:They're middle-aged men with beards and glasses. They no more resemble each other than either of them resembles me (except that they're both thinner than I am...)

^^ Usually I'd agree with that...but Mr. Delmas has the same exact kind of part in his hair as Miyazaki-san does. The design of their glasses is also quite similar (a triangular rim for the nose). It's a pretty weird coincidence...I guess we'd just have to ask the character designers to know for sure though. ;)

Anyway, having recently seen "My Neighbor Totoro"...please consider the following two pictures:

Link 1
Link 2

Do these two look slightly similar at all to anyone else? ^^; I might be just overly obsessive here but they did sort of strike me as looking like incarnations of each other. X)

Also...on a non-Miyazaki related note, but still on a "Character Inspiration" issue...these two pictures are also of interest:

Trowa
Ulrich

XD

Hehe Trowa Barton and Ulrich Stern - I think I put up some comparison pics of these two a while back. Gotta love the unibangs! :D Looking at the Trowa pics, he also has vaguely triangular eyebrows and those 'casual' pictures at the bottom scream 'ULRICH' to me!

As a note, though Ulrich resembles Trowa from 'Gundam Wing', I feel he also had elements of the same show's protagonist, Heero Yuy, in him, particularly in 'Garage Kids' when he played the strong, silent type.

Nice find Mew :)

Here's one thing I've been mulling over for a while - When Odd goes evil - I swear, either Odd and Syndrome are one and the same (gasp!) or they share fashion, humor and dating tips! :D

:*D Yeah...the one of him with his hands in his pockets and laughing at something off-screen...Definitely! The picture next to that really makes me think of him too. ^^

Thanks! ^_^ I totally agree. Ulrich's personality is much more like Heero's than it is Trowa's. But...man, if I didn't know any better, I'd say Trowa must be Ulrich's long lost brother...or a descendant. ^^; (There must be a crossover out there for this... ^^)

XD I don't know...Odd's not a red-head though...and his hair is a perfect point (Syndrome didn't quite use enough gel, I guess... ;) ). I'd more believe that Odd's based off the design of the Super Saiyans of DBZ....although again...even their hair doesn't stick up into one point. ^^; Hmmm....where did the idea for Odd come from? X)

I think this guylooks more like the father in My Neighbor Totoro than Ishiyama-san does. He's Henry Mitchell, father of Dennis Mitchell in the American comic Dennis The Menace, which is three days older than the English comic called Dennis The Menace. I am more familiar with the American one...

I've always wondered what would happen if a blonde Saiyan went Super...

My guess would be that their hair would get longer and more spiked and maybe more of a gold colour than blonde. What if nappa went super saiyan. :*D

Maybe Ulrich is the little brother of Hero and Trowa who are all secretly related. :umm:

I don't think the difference beltween yellow and gold hair shows up too well on screen, though.

Hm, maybe Odd's hair was based off of Vegeta's super saiyan hair...

Edit: And nappa going super saiyan? I don't think you could even tell the difference! :*D

But his movies have some pretty cool animation. Up until the pig part, I really liked the movie.

Did you ever watch the rest? I thoguht it was a good movie which was the first Miyazaki movie that I saw. I have seen part of Castle in the Sky. I saw most of it, but then I fell asleep. lol.
Next Japanese Holiday:

July/August 7, Star Festival (tanabata)

About: 7th day of the 7th month of the year, when, according to a Chinese legend, the two stars Altair and Vega, which are usually separated from each other by the milky way, are able to meet. Some celebrate it in July others in August. Tanabata is not a national holiday.

I don't know if with this idea I could stir it back to "very freaky"... but have you ever imagined Kiwi getting plastic surgery?

This isn't necessarily a lookalike, but Emily "Lili" Rochefort from Tekken acts similar to Sissi at times.
